ABOUT THE BOOK

In 1967 the military build-up in Viet Nam is undergoing a dramatic surge. The resulting explosion of anti-war sentiment tears the country apart, slicing through generations and shattering families. In the quiet bedroom community of Shepherdsville, Minnesota, the war comes home to Frank and Maggie McRae, whose only son, Mike, is serving as a grunt in Viet Nam.

Frank despises all Asians because of what he witnessed as a young soldier fighting the Japanese in the south Pacific during WWII. The news that his son has fallen in love with and married Thi Nhuong, a young Vietnamese woman, shocks him. To Frank all Asians are enemies of his country, his family, and himself. A Buddhist, Thi Nhuong represents everything he despises. So he cuts Mike out of his life despite the pleas of his wife, Maggie; daughter, Julie; and Julie s husband, Dan, the pastor of a growing congregation.

Maggie is fighting her own battle--against cancer. Convinced that God is going to heal her, Frank plays the part of a model Christian. Her death on Thanksgiving Day devastates him. Worse, as they arrive home from the gravesite, the family receives news of Mike s death in battle. Embittered, Frank stops attending church and cuts off family and friends.

By the time a very pregnant Thi Nhuong arrives on his doorstep on a stormy Christmas Eve, Frank is so filled with hate that he slams the door in her face, shutting her out in the bitter cold. Finally, overcome by guilt, he tries to go after her, but driving wind and snow force him back inside. With the storm rising to blizzard strength, he confronts the wrenching truth that what hate has driven him to do is as evil as what the Japanese did all those years earlier, and that he needs forgiveness as desperately as they did ...

Frank doesn't know that what God has in mind this night is a miracle. As on that holy night so many years ago, a baby will be born and laid in a manger--a baby who will bring forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing to a family that has suffered heart-wrenching loss.

In The Shadow of Lions, by Ginger Garrett

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

In The Shadow Of Lions

David C. Cook; 1 edition (September 2008)

by

Ginger Garrett

SavVy ReView: Ginger Garrett's "In the Shadow of Lions" brings history to life. From her lucious description of winter in London, which was "A feast for the senses: the smoky fragrances of burning coals, roasting hazelnuts, and the last of the young venison, the ringing of horses with bells on their harnesses, the sight of the vendor's stalls lined with hanging birds of every variety for the cooks: woodcocks, thrushes, robins, hens, wrens, quail, hawks, pheasant, partridge..."

To her wrenching depiction of a heretic priest, pried from his grave to burn at the stake: Rose "Watched in horror as a priest, dead and limp, rose in front of her from the dark pit where death's seal had been broken. His priestly robes were rotted, hanging in loose shreds...[his] eye sockets were sunken and black, and his mouth hung open stiffly, as if he had one last word to preach."

The respected Sir Thomas More "plunged the knife parallel to the body and up, slicing the holy robes off, tossing them into a pile behind him. He grabbed the hat that had identified the man as a priest of God and jerked it away with such force that the head turned almost backward. The corpse's open mouth faced her....'Come brothers, good men of God, and curse this heretic!"

Then Sir More "Shouted above them: 'Poena Damni. You are sentenced the eternal night, where the worm does not die and the fire does not go out...You have betrayed the annointing of your office, and it is removed."

Rose "Bowed her head. God's punishment had found this man only in death. She feared her own would be slow in coming...." and then threw herself underneath Sir More's carriage wheels to be trampled to death, but is saved by her guardian angel, and then falls in love with Sir More.

Garrett tells the story from the perspective of three women: Bridget the narrator (a modern woman dying of cancer), who pens the story given to her by an unusual guardian angel; Rose (who has her own guardian angel), a woman who learns to read and comes to Christ through Hutchins (Tyndale's) new Bible translation; and Anne Bolyn, who Garrett believes may have been "one of the greatest Christian martyrs ever to have lived. Tyndale certainly thought she was a friend of Christ." Garrett's other major characters

Sir Thomas More, whose life and motives show him as a man so devoted to his faith and church that he persecute's heretics (readers of Tyndale's Bible) in order to save their souls from hell.

King Henry VIII, who crawls to church on bloodied knees to seek God's favor to have an heir for his throne, but then demands a divorce on biblical grounds (his interpretation of Tyndale's New Testament) from Catherine, the popular Catholic queen, who involves the authority of the Pope and the Catholic church in her refusal. (Personally, I think she was right to refuse Henry's demand for divorce.) He sets out to bed Anne Bolyn, who refuses him without marriage and gains the reputation as his mistress (and a witch), anyway.

Garrett sheds new light on Anne Boleyn, whose only crime was that she "manipulated" the King by refusing to be his mistress, forcing him to demand a divorce from Catherine. Anne became instrumental in convincing Henry VIII to officially recognize Tyndale's New Testament, the first English Bible translation to be printed in England.

An excellent read--well-researched and full of suspense. Garrett makes history come alive---Vicki

A native Texan, she now resides in Georgia with her husband and three children.

ABOUT THE BOOK

"I am the first writer, The Scribe. My books lie open before the Throne, and someday will be the only witness of your people and their time in this world."

So begins the narration of one such angel in this sweeping historical tale set during the reign of England's Henry VIII. It is the story of two women, their guardian angels, and a mysterious, subversive book ... a book that outrages some, inspires others, and launches the Protestant Reformation.

The devout Anne Boleyn catches the eye of a powerful king and uses her influence to champion an English translation of the Bible. Meanwhile, Rose, a broken, suicidal woman of the streets, is moved to seek God when she witnesses Thomas More's public displays of Christian charity, ignorant of his secret life spent eradicating the Bible, persecuting anyone who dares read it.

Historic figures come alive in this thrilling story of heroes and villains, saints and sinners, angels and mortals ... and the sacred book that will inspire you anew. Fans of Francine Rivers and Karen Kingsbury will love Ginger's intriguing combination of rich character development, artful settings, and inspiring historical insights.

The manuscript has been showing up and disappearing ever since. No one knows where the relic has been hidden . . . or its ultimate power. Only one man holds the key to the mystery. He's carrying it in his briefcase at his son's school for show-and-tell, and he thinks it's a fake. But he's about to find out just how real it is. Because the wolves are rapidly closing in. And if August Adams can't decode the secret in time, the world's balance of power will forever be altered.

Book Review Round-Up

The Unnatural History of Cypress Parish, by Elise Blackwell,Unbridled Books Publisher. March 2007.

Excellent literary novel written by Elise Blackwell, Creative Writing teacher at the University of South Carolina. She writes beautifully, even though her subject is the flooding of communities around New Orleans in 1926. Naturally, you can't forget the recent disaster in New Orleans as you read the novel. One theme: History repeats itself, if we refuse to learn from it. "

"Secrets From Lulu's Cafe, Desperate Pastors' Wives," by Ginger Kolbaba & Christy Scannell, Howard Fiction, publisher, 2007.

The title is a little "off-putting," but I think this book probably has more depth than its cover betrays.

Looks to be a very honest portrayal of the difficulties pastors' wives have dealing with the problems of living life: except, that we expect, no, demand is more likely, that they be perfect. No mistakes allowed, and "she'd better speak to me first!"

The Watchers, by Mark Anderson Olsen, bestselling author of The Assignment, Bethany House, 2007.
This is an excellent 'spiritual thriller. It has the high-stakes suspense similar to "Left Behind" series, but the writing is excellent. I love the opening passage that describes a murder scene through the unusual perspective of a freshly, but bloodied, murdered woman!

"The blue flickers of her television danced across the housekeeper's unmoving pupils. She never budged a muscle, nor leveled the odd tilt of her head, nor wiped the crimson trickles crisscrossing her neck, nor rose from the stain darkening the sofa cushions beneath her. Nor did she notice that, twenty feet away, a man gripping the weapon of her murder had now reached the bedroom door of her 'angelic one... No, deep in the final tremors of her death, the housekeeper did not hear her assailant turn the bedroom's door handle or seem him enter the room. Nor did she scream when he took two padded strides into shadow."

And it gets much more intense after that.

Sacred Causes, The Clash of Religion and Politics, From the Great War to the War on Terror, by Michael Burleigh, HarperCollins Publishers, 2007.

An excellent social history detailing how religion can be usurped and camouflaged by politics. A favorite tantalizing thought: "The 1960s era brought to the forefront "forces that seemed to be turning Europe into a post-Christian desert, in which "wisdom" would be represented by the lyrics of John Lennon."

House of Dark Shadows & Watcher in The Woods by Robert Liparulo

Loved these books! I introduced my 16-year-old daughter to Liparulo's writing with these books. She loved them and now wants to read "Comes A Horseman," my personal favorite.
Liparulo's young adult series, "House of Dark Shadows," and "Watcher in The Woods," is a little scary in the beginning, but its secret portals lead to suspensful high-adventures with high-level stakes. You won't be able to put Liparulo's books down.
Recommended!

From A Distance by Tamera Alexander

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance Introduces

From A Distance

(Bethany House June 1, 2008)

by

Tamera Alexander

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Tamera Alexander is a bestselling novelist whose deeply drawn characters, thought-provoking plots and poignant prose resonate with readers. Tamera is a finalist for the 2008 Christy Award Remembered, and has been awarded the coveted RITA® from Romance Writers of America Revealed, along with Library Journal’s Top Christian Fiction of 2006 Rekindled. Having lived in Colorado for seventeen years, she and her husband now make their home in the quaint town of historic Franklin, Tennessee, where they enjoy life with their two college-age children and a precious—and precocious—silky terrier named Jack.

A Note from Tamera:

Stories are journeys, and each story I write is a journey for me.

Rekindled began with a dream—the image of a man returning home on horseback. He came upon a freshly dug grave and when he knelt to read the name carved into the roughhewn wooden cross, he discovered the name was…his own. The inspiration for Revealed grew from two characters in Rekindled whose stories needed to be told. But even more, whose stories I needed to tell. Writing Revealed was a very personal journey for me, and a healing one. For Remembered, I met that story’s heroine (figuratively, of course) while strolling the ancient cobblestoned pathways of a three hundred-year-old cemetery in northern Paris, France. And From A Distance came from a question I was struggling with in my own life at the time, “What happens when the dream you asked God for isn’t what you thought it would be?”

For me, the greatest thrill of these writing journeys is when Christ reveals Himself in some new way, and I take a step closer to Him. And my deepest desire is that readers of my books will do that as well—take steps closer to Him as they read. After all, it’s all about Him.

In the Potter’s Hand,

Tamera

A Whisper of Freedom by Tricia Goyer

About A Whisper of Freedom

Battles heat up…not only those being waged by the soldiers on both sides fighting for Spain, but in the hearts and minds of the men and women who must sacrifice more than their dreams to save the lives of their loved ones. In this meticulously researched novel, brave and idealistic Sophie, Philip, Jose, and Deion realize their only hope for freedom is escaping Spain 's borders.
By continuing the story of this band of volunteers during the Spanish Civil War, A Whisper of Freedom proves that there are whispers of hope and liberty that resonate through even the darkest night.

Blood Brothers, by Rick Acker

Blood Brothers, by Rick Acker, Kregel Publishers, 2008

Rick Acker's Blood Brothers is excellent. One of the best thrillers I've read. Click on the link below to read the first chapter.

About the book
In this intense sequel to Dead Man’s Rule, lawyer Ben Corbin finds himself caught between feuding brothers Karl and Gunnar Bjornsen. The Bjornsens built a pharmaceutical empire from the ground up. Now they are developing a revolutionary new drug, a neural stimulant that increases strength and intelligence, but its potential for success is rapidly destroying them. Warring for control of the company and the drug, Karl sues Gunnar, and Gunnar hires lawyer Ben Corbin to defend him.
But the case involves more than bitter sibling rivalry. Signs of embezzlement, black market deals, and the grisly consequences of the Bjornsens’ new drug begin to emerge. Soon, Ben and his wife, Noelle, find themselves in Norway where the case takes a personal and violent turn.

Trouble the Water by Nicole Seitz

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance Presents

Trouble the Water by Nicole Seitz

Thomas Nelson (March 11, 2008)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Nicole Seitz is a South Carolina Lowcountry native and the author of The Spirit of Sweetgrass as well as a freelance writer/illustrator who has published in numerous low country magazines. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Journalism, she also has a bachelor's degree in illustration from Savannah College of Art & Design. Nicole shows her paintings in the Charleston, South Carolina area, where she owns a web design firm and lives with her husband and two small children. Nicole is also an avid blogger, you can leave her a comment on her blog.

Seitz's writing style recalls that of Southern authors like Kaye Gibbons, Anne Rivers Siddons, and Sue Monk Kidd, and this new novel, which the publisher compares to Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, surely joins the ranks of strong fiction that highlights the complicated relationships between women. Highly recommended, especially for Southern libraries.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In the South Carolina Sea Islands lush setting, Nicole Seitz's second novel Trouble the Water is a poignant novel about two middle-aged sisters' journey to self-discovery.

One is seeking to recreate her life yet again and learns to truly live from a group of Gullah nannies she meets on the island. The other thinks she's got it all together until her sister's imminent death from cancer causes her to re-examine her own life and seek the healing and rebirth her troubled sister managed to find on St. Anne's Island.

Strong female protagonists are forced to deal with suicide, wife abuse, cancer, and grief in a realistic way that will ring true for anyone who has ever suffered great loss.

"This is another thing I know for a fact: a woman can't be an island, not really. No, it's the touching we do in other people's lives that matters when all is said and done. The silly things we do for ourselves--shiny new cars and jobs and money--they don't mean a hill of beans. Honor taught me that. My soul sisters on this island taught me that. And this is the story of true sisterhood. It's the story of Honor, come and gone, and how one flawed woman worked miracles in this mixed-up world."

"...a special sisterhood of island women whose wisdom and courage linger in the mind long after the book is closed."
-NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author SUSAN WIGGS

Linda Windsor Apologizes to Her Readers

Christian writer Linda Windsor, author of Wedding Bell Blues, asks bloggers to spread the word of her heartfelt apologies regarding two regrettable errors in her novel, Wedding Bell Blues. Please read and pass on Linda's apologies.

Linda says, "When called to my attention, I didn't at first believe it. I didn't remember my hero having a Rhett Butler moment when he said, "D_mn, I still love you, Alex." And while I'd written unsaved character Sue Ann exclaiming, "Oh my g_wd!" with the intent of convicting Sue Ann of its blasphemy in her own book #4, I changed her mind after discussing it with my editor and deleted those occurences rather than offend anyone. Well, I missed one. The GOOD NEWS is that these have been removed from future printings and book club issues.

"To anyone who read Wedding Bell Blues and was offended, my humble apologies. I'd written this book after my husband died and during those months of brain fog, I almost stopped writing because it was so hard to put coherent thought together. Then I turned it in months late, which put my publisher in a bind as far as getting the usual multiple editings. This was the result. Granted, I must have written these blunders or they would not have been there. For that, I can only ask for your forgiveness and understanding."---Linda

ADAM, by Ted Dekker

The Christian Fiction Blog Alliance Introduces

ADAM by Ted Dekker

On bookstands April 1, 2008, Thomas Nelson, Publishers

Ted Dekker proves himself to be the master of suspense with ADAM. Caution: Read in broad-daylight only! - Vicki

ABOUT Ted Dekker
Ted is the son of missionaries John and Helen Dekker, whose incredible story of life among headhunters in Indonesia has been told in several books. Surrounded by the vivid colors of the jungle and a myriad of cultures, each steeped in their own interpretation of life and faith, Dekker received a first-class education on human nature and behavior. This, he believes, is the foundation of his writing.

After graduating from a multi-cultural high school, he took up permanent residence in the United States to study Religion and Philosophy. After earning his Bachelor's Degree, Dekker entered the corporate world in management for a large healthcare company in California. Dekker was quickly recognized as a talent in the field of marketing and was soon promoted to Director of Marketing. This experience gave him a background which enabled him to eventually form his own company and steadily climb the corporate ladder.

Since 1997, Dekker has written full-time. He states that each time he writes, he finds his understanding of life and love just a little clearer and his expression of that understanding a little more vivid. Dekker's body of work encompasses seven mysteries, three thrillers and ten fantasies. It includes Heaven's Wager, When Heaven Weeps, Thunder of Heaven, Blessed Child, A Man Called Blessed, Blink, Thr3e, The Circle Trilogy (Black, Red, White), and Obsessed, with two more...Renegade, and Chaos to be released later this year.

ABOUT THE BOOK
He died once to stop the killer...now he's dying again to save his wife.

FBI behavioral psychologist Daniel Clark has become famous for his well-articulated argument that religion is one of society’s greatest antagonists. What Daniel doesn’t know is that his obsessive pursuit of a serial killer known only as “Eve” is about to end abruptly with an unexpected death-his own.

Twenty minutes later Daniel is resuscitated, only to be haunted by the loss of memory of the events immediately preceding his death.

Daniel becomes convinced that the only way to stop Eve is to recover those missing minutes during which he alone saw the killer’s face. And the only way to access them is to trigger his brain’s memory dump that occurs at the time of death by simulating his death again…and again. So begins a carefully researched psychological thriller which delves deep into the haunting realities of near-death experiences, demon possession, and the human psche.

"As always with a Ted Dekker thriller, the details of ADAM are stunning, pointing to meticulous research in a raft of areas: police and FBI methods, forensic medicine, psychological profiling-in short, all that accompanies a Federal hunt for a serial killer. But Dekker fully reveals his magic in the latter part of the book, when he subtly introduces his darker and more frightening theme. It's all too creepily convincing. We have to keep telling ourselves that this is fiction. At the same time, we can't help thinking that not only could it happen, but that it will happen if we're not careful."

New York Times best-selling author Ted Dekker unleashes his most riveting novel yet...an elusive serial killer whose victims die of unknown causes and the psychologist obsessed with catching him.

ABOUT THE BOOK

1803, the colony of Texas

Awaken My Heart is set in 19th century Texas and tells the story of 18 year old Marianne Phillips, the daughter of a wealthy rancher, Weston Phillips. Weston is involved in a hostile struggle with Armando Garcia, the infamous rebel leader of the 'mestizos' who claim to own the land that Phillips has settled.

Marianne Phillips, the daughter of a wealthy rancher, has never agreed with her father's harsh treatment of the poor mestizos who first inhabited the colony of Texas. When rebels kidnap Marianne, in hopes her father will trade back their land for her freedom, she realizes her loyalty lies with her abductors, not her father, who plans to marry her off to the don of a nearby estate.

Armando Garcia is the locals' reluctant leader, but his people revere and depend on him. Knowing that without his leadership they'd be forced from their land, Armando accepts his role, but does not approve of the latest attempt to manipulate their enemy. When he learns that Marianne actually speaks his language, of her loyalty to his people, and of the faith that keeps her strong, Armando is faced with a difficult decision. Will his newfound love keep him from letting her go? Or will he set her free and risk losing their land forever?

Recommended. DiAnn Mills' Awaken My Heart is spellbinding!

Superwoman doesn't live here!

I marry a gorgeous executive, have a baby, lose all the weight (most of it), and move to a fine house in the suburbs with a welcoming new church. Wait...did I say welcoming?

One teeny waaah! and new mothers and their crying babies are exiled to a separate room. At least there's some enlightening conversation. Like about my husband and issues I didn't even know about!

And then there's my aptly named mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, who can't stand me.

I'm about to lose my mind! So it's high time for a visit to the Sassy Sistahood for some much-needed advice about men, marriage and motherhood!

The Sassy Sistahood: They get by with a little help from their friends.
